We were put into pairs based off of the register. I was paired with Amy Hill. Research was carried out quickly and had limitations due to time scale. In teams of two, the race was on to produce an album cover design, a poster design and a quick design of our choice. The real-life brief to the album cover design is listed below along with basic research from the internet. The first of the trio of briefs was a 'cut and paste' from the email sent to DR.ME from a client:
BRIEF 001. Vinyl Cover Design
"We're gonna be releasing a limited edition 12" of a mix evian christ made last year called duga-3...
We were discussing artwork concepts and josh wondered if there was any way you could graphically represent the 10hz tapping sound that makes up the duga-3 transmission?
Important to mention right now is that we don't have a lot of time to do this, as this release is intended for record store day and they have super tight deadlines, so we need this by the end of today?"
Dimensions 12” x 12”
Time Scale: 2 hours
Album Cover Design - Research
Colours and shapes were taken from images of Woodpeckers as
symbolism for the sound of the Duga-3
Themes of mind control spurred images of Dadaism.
Album Cover Design - Variations
These are my own design variations, some created after the session as further investigation.
The shape of the head that I drew using Adobe
Illustrator is inspired by Futurism and Dadaistic
themes following ideas of ‘Soviet mind control’
through the Duga-3. The overall image is very
abstract, which I think is suitable for the mix,
encouraging anything that seems to provoke
thought. I picked the red and white colour scheme
following Russian inspiration.
Chosen Design
The same design is seen in this variation, except
in a more contemporary black and white colour
scheme, accompanied by the track title and artist
name.
BRIEF 002. Poster design

Dimensions A3 (297 x 420 mm)"
I did this poster in about half an hour... It's definitely not the usual design style I work in
but I really like the way it turned out. The brief made me think on my feet really fast and so I did this without any real research, just remembering pieces I had seen in the past.
I thought I would show my skills on Adobe Illustrator and quickly illustrate a little fox. It took about 15 minutes!
